News from Tameside Sea Cadets

09th Feb 2006

  Dear Subscriber,

Well we are a month into 2006 and gearing the units training up in anticipation of the upcoming Royal Naval Parade, where the units staff, cadets and facilities are inspected by the RN/Sea Cadet HQ. This event is being held from 19.00 (7pm) on Thursday 9th March 2006. Parents and friends are welcome to attend the unit that evening which is an important one for the unit.....

December and January are usually quite quiet in terms of activities but the cadets have been busy during this period and we have done lots of training, a summary of the key news for Jan to date is detailed below.

Cadets pick up 3rd Class Seamanship Awards...

A group of cadets attended the unit on the 15th Jan to learn vital and valuable seamanship skills. Seamanship is something that we expect all our cadets to take early on as boating and water activities feature high on our agenda being sea cadets.

As well as gaining valuable new skills, the cadets who complete the training receive a specialisation badge and also 3 points towards their future advancement chances.

Well done to cadets Nathan Burke, Jemma Shaw, Laura Handley, Andrew Taylor, Charlotte Latchford, Jack Townely, Domonic Traynor and Jorge Sanderson - each who have been awarded the Seamanship 3rd Class qualification.

Tameside unit gets an extra five Leading Cadets...

Well Done and congratulations from all at the unit go to Charlotte Saycell, Karla Lowe, Hannah Parker, Sallie and Cassie Matley.

The girls attended the leading district leading cadet board held at Tameside unit at the end of January. The leading cadet board is run to ensure that cadets who want to advance from able to leading cadet have the relevant knowledge about the sea cadets, seamanship and parade training.

With this promotion will come more responsibility in taking charge for and teaching the younger cadets of the unit at the same time as being only one year and one step away from the being able to try for the highest rank that can be achieved by a cadet - Cadet Petty Officer.

The girls attended the unit along with 5 male cadets from Buxton and reports say that did really well. This means that Tameside unit can now boast eightLeading Cadets (All girls) and one Petty Officer Cadet, Anthony Cooper.

Forresters Call Supports Tameside Unit...

Each year During December the Forresters call pub raises money for the local community to give to a worthwile Charity in the area. This year the unit was chosen. The unit was looking for funds to replace its expedition training equipment such as tents, galley tent and camping equipment.

We were hoping that the pub could raise the funds we needed around £250 so the equipment could be updated before the first annual camp at Abersoch in Wales this coming easter.

We were not disapointed, thanks to efforts of Alex Schofield at the Forresters Call and her patrons the managed to raise a whopping £415, which means that we wont have to compromise on quality and can get the exact equiment we need.

The unit would like to thank Alex and the customers of the Forresters Call, their support is very greatly appreciated.

Cadet Advancements in the Unit
...

Well Done to the following cadets who have recently completed their advancement training in the unit and are hereby promoted.

New Entries, Sarah Bickerton and Jack Jansen recently completed their assessments and were advanced to cadets.

Cadet, Chris Taylor recently completed his assessment and wasadvanced to Ordinary Cadet.

Ordinary Cadets, Nathan Halton and Jamie Parkinson completed their assessments and were advanced to Able Cadets. In fact Nathan only got two questions wrong which was an excellent result.

If you are not sure what you need to do to advance its very simply. Make sure you have the correct number of points, know your subjects and attend on a regular basis or get in touch with the training officer to discuss further.

Display aboard HMS Ocean in London looks promising...

Yes, thats right following on from the success of the window ladder team in Londons Trafalgar Square, the team has been asked if it wishes to perform onboard one of the Navys biggest and newest warships HMS Ocean in London in the presence of the Queen.

More details of this event will follow very soon, at present we are going through the process of raising monies for the structure that holds the frame up as well as ensuring that health and safety and risk assessments are done for performing on the ship.

The team will board HMS Ocean in Portsmouth and during the week will sail on the ship to London to perform. So lets keep our fingers crossed that this goes ahead and the district of Tameside can show the country what excellent young people it has.

One Years Good Conduct Award

Well done to Laura Handley who have completed just over a year with the unit. Laura will be awarded her one years good conduct award, a single stripe which is to be worn under her rank badge for a years good conduct with the sea cadets.

Upcoming Events....

11th Feb - Weekend general cadet and inspection training at the unit.
18th Feb - Weekend Staff IM Course at Bollington unit.
24th Feb- Weekend Writer Stores and Communications training at the unit.
9th Mar - Royal Naval Parade Evening (Compulsory Cadet Parade) Visitors welcome

Dont forget, the National, Area, District and Offshore Training programmes for 2006 have now been released. Check the training notice board or contact the myself if there is a specific course you would like to attend.

Remember if you leave it until the last minute and dont plan than you may well miss out as sea cadets from all over the country are requesting places on these courses and they are limited numbers.

We have requested 3 places on the HMS Bristol summer camp this year, being held onboard HMS Bristol in HMS Excellent in Portsmouth on the 21st July for the week, dont leave it until the last moment if you want to be considered for a place.

Good luck to you all for the upcoming inspection
